The Joy of
Drawing Patterns

In this course I’ll introduce you to the meditative but very addictive process of pattern playing. With a minimum of materials, you learn the basics of creating powerful though simple patterns. Also I’ll be showing the endless possibilities of how to use these patterns for all your art purposes, like creating gift wrapping paper, art journaling and adding it to your art pieces.

Simple Steps To Draw
Gorgeous Patterns

This class is very accessible for anyone who wants to try out designing patterned paper. It’s a ‘dry’ class, so without paint, so you could even work on your kitchen table or at your desk. You will see you won’t need much materials to keep you going. Just some mark making tools, Kraft paper and there we go!

In a few steps I’ll show you how I create some patterns. The possibilities are endless, even though we just work with circles and stripes in this class.

Duration: approx. 2 hrs.

Patterns are Everywhere!

Before you’re getting started with creating your own patterns, you gather inspiration from things surrounding you in your daily life. As soon as you’ll get started with this course, you’ll find out that patterns are everywhere! If you only take a look around your house, you’ll discover them… So, you don’t need to go anywhere to spark ideas. Although, of course inspiration can be found in many places, from an inner city church through to a walk in nature.

The Uses of Patterned Paper

After creating our patterns, we pay attention to the uses of the pattern paper, for example to use it in a painting, for package paper and how to use it for decoration on utensils like boxes.
On top of that, you’ll get two BONUS lessons in which I will show you how I use the patterned paper for my art journal and I will create customized gift wrapping paper.

For all levels

Whether you are an experienced artist searching for a fresh approach or have no art experience at all, this course is suitable for you! The lessons are designed to help you open up to new techniques and (re)discover that playful experience.

Your teacher Luz

Your art teacher: Luz

Marloes Bloedjes alias Luz is an artist living in The Netherlands, creating colorful, abstract paintings and mixed media artworks. She enjoys long walks in nature. Back home she mixes her impressions with her rich inner world. When these two come together, magical creations are born.  In addition to her work as an artist, she teaches adults and children in her studio since 2010.

Since 2018 Luz is developing online classes, together with her partner, photo/videographer Anthony Verolme.

I am really thrilled by creating patterns. In a lot of my paintings you can see how I incorporate patterns. Also I use my paper patterns for art journaling and mixed-media pieces like angels..”

List of Supplies

Recycle what you have!

You just need a few art supplies. Later on, when you get the idea, you might feel the need to experiment with more materials like paint and inks. For this class we only use ‘dry’ material, to keep it as simple as can be.
You could work on your kitchen table as well!

Paper

I work on various kraft papers, like the brown wrapping paper, shoe box
paper, paper bags and all you can find and collect in and around your home. If necessary, you could buy kraft paper in your local art shop as well.

Mark Making Items

I use Copic markers, Twin markers and Posca acrylic markers in this class. Both Copic and Twin markers are based on alcohol. This means that their ink is transparent, so they will not be visible on a dark surface. The Posca pens can be used on a dark surface. If you work with paint, the Posca’s are
really perfect. I still can’t stop working with Copics though, because I love their colour palette.

When choosing your colours, make sure you have a dark tone, a middle tone and a light thone. The darkest and lightest tone could also be black and white. I myself, chose to work with all shades of green and a contrasting colour, pink. I also use some simple pens; a black Bic ballpoint and a white Signo uni-ball pen (broad).

Gel Medium

For the Bonus Lessons (how to use your patterned papers) you might need a gel medium or a glue. When I work in my journal I prefer working with an acrylic gel medium, which also works like glue. You could also use a simple glue stick for this purpose.

Don't Forget...

If you work with gel medium, you might need something to protect your table and and your clothes.

Testimonials

“I enrolled in the Pattern Playing course at Luz.Artworks. I watched the full set of videos, then went to gather all my supplies and got to work. This course was so inspiring that I could not stop working at, or dreaming about, my art pieces for three days straight! Luz is an excellent teacher and I found her so aligned with my thinking – “it’s all about the process” and “know when to stop if it doesn’t add to the piece”! The course and workbook were so clear, of high quality, and so inspiring. Next time I will work with more muted colours and will work more on developing my patterns, although I was still very happy with my results. 😊 Thank you Luz.”

“I think ‘Fun with Drawing Patterns’ is an extremely inspiring course for both beginner and advanced artist. I have been painting for years myself and I love the process of discovering new ‘treasures’ in myself. That is exactly what happens automatically when you start with this course. Below you see a photo of the patterns I designed. This makes me so happy and it gives relaxation and energy. It makes me forget everything for a while.”
