Art Journaling 4:
Weave & Unravel

Use thread, wool and textiles in your art journal

In the fourth part of the series of lessons on art journaling you will work with scraps of fabric, wool, threads, ribbons and much more. What is the common thread? Which mysteries will you unravel? How do you process used materials and create something completely new out of these and make it your own? Are you going to embroider, weave or sew or are you going to stick a piece of fabric with gel medium? I show you all kinds of ways to brighten up your art journal. Textile is a great addition, especially to pages with burlap or canvas. And of course you will also work with acrylic paint and mixed-media materials. Highly recommended for those who want to pull out all the stops!

3 Bonus Lessons

You get no less than 3 bonus lessons with this class. These are all about collecting material. Where can you find nice fabrics and useful pieces of paper? And how do you organize it in a clear system? Because soon you have collected so much useful things for your art journal that you run the rist of losing the overview. Setting up an inspiration folder and storing your things is also very relaxing.

This class includes:

  • About 3 hours in 14 separate video lessons in which I tell you everything about incorporating textiles into your art journal; I show you step by step how I set up my own pages;
  • 3 BONUS LESSONS;
  • Access to the private classroom of ‘Brave Art Academy’ where you can meet other students, share your results and share valuable feedback;
  • Start right away, unlimited access to the teaching materials;

“Took 2 online classes here on Brave Art Academy, ‘The Joy of Drawing Patterns’ and ‘An Introduction to Art Journaling’. It is all set up in a playful way and everything is explained very clearly step by step. Luz also gives all kinds of examples of how you can apply what you have learned. I am very enthusiastic and will continue taking classes with Luz!”

Work abstractly or around a theme

When creating your two pages, choose a theme that suits your current interests. This can be something from nature or you can be inspired by a piece of fabric. Of course you can also choose to only work with colours and keep your pages abstract.

On my pages I work with a theme inspired by nature. Within this theme I go all out with weaving techniques, embroidery and braiding. And that’s not even all… I’ll also show you many other pages I’ve created before and tell you how I built them. This way you can also see that there are different ways in which you can use textiles in your projects. After taking this class you will have enough ideas to fill an entire book!

What you will learn in this class

  • Where you can find beautiful pieces of fabric, paper and other materials for your art journal;
  • How to create an inspiration folder and how to organize and store the abundance of materials;
  • How to make a selection of materials before starting a project;
  • How to work on the composition of your page step by step, first a rough outline, laying everything out in a playful way and finally determining what will play the leading role on your pages;
  • How to choose a wonderful colour palette based on your chosen fabrics and how to use it to set up a background with a brayer or roller and a palette knife;
  • How to attach textiles in your art journal;
  • How to put everything together into two balanced and sparkling pages;

Mixed-media techniques: You can use anything!

In this class you will work with various materials. Old book pages, beautiful pieces of paper and of course pieces of fabric, yarn, ribbons, and everything that has to do with textiles play the leading role in your project. In addition, acrylic paint is the basis for setting up your pages. I use acrylic paint and some markers to finish it. You will see that the possibilities are endless and that you can use almost anything. At the same time, you don’t have to purchase much for this course. This course is also suitable if you want to work on a surface other than in an art journal, for example on mixed-media paper or on a burlap canvas.

Art Journaling is for everyone!

This is the fourth class on art journaling. You can participate if you have no experience at all, but also if you have been drawing or painting for some time. It doesn’t have to be perfect; everyone has their own pace and growth process. The course invites you to play, try out new things and, above all, have fun in journaling.

Are you going on a trip with us?

We often travel through Europe with our vintage Hymer camper. We also release new classes when we are on the road. This way you not only take a creative course, but you also go on a journey with us! For example, we recorded the ‘Fairytales’ course in Sweden and the ‘Discoveries’ course takes place in a beautiful location in the Corrèze in France. We recorded this class ‘Weave & Unravel’ in my studio at home.

“I learned a lot during the Art Journaling class. It was my first experience with this and I have now started my second book wink Each lesson we worked with a different theme and I was inspired to try something new that I could continue with at home. Luz gives a good explanation about the composition of the pages and use of colour. While working in my journal, my personal goal was ‘breaking patterns’. By painting I was able to get out of my head and process things. I was very happy with the explanation about the repairing the cover of my book. This gives me a beautiful end result and a journal to be proud of!”
