Your teacher Luz

Your art teacher: Luz

Marloes Bloedjes alias Luz is an artist living in The Netherlands, creating colourful, abstract paintings and mixed media artworks. She enjoys long walks in nature. Back home she mixes her impressions with her rich inner world. When these two come together, magical creations are born.  In addition to her work as an artist, she teaches adults and children in her studio since 2010.

Since 2018 Luz is developing online classes, together with her partner, photo/videographer Anthony Verolme.

I am really thrilled by creating patterns. In a lot of my paintings you can see how I incorporate patterns. Also I use my paper patterns for art journaling and mixed-media pieces like angels..”

List of Supplies

Choosing your Flowers

First of all, you need a flower as a starting point for this course. Preferably a real flower. If you cannot pick or buy these, use your own photos in which you see the flower from various angles.

Substrate

You could work on paper, a wooden panel or canvas. I prefer mixed media paper, for example from Canson. You could also work in an art journal. I’m using Ranger’s, Dina Wakley.

For the backgrounds of the patterns, use thin paper, for example tissue paper, tea bags, or packaging paper, for example from a shoe box. I often use paper that is slightly transparent. I love using silk paper.

I use acrylic paint from Winsor & Newton, Galeria and Amsterdam.

I use a roller to set up the background, for example the Esdee ink roller. You could use a wide brush (spalter) too.

I also use a palette and I make sure I have a water bowl and a piece of kitchen roll if I want to clean the roller or brush in between.

Designing your Patterns

For the patterns I use Posca acrylic markers or Edding acrylic markers. I also use various Copic and Twin markers. In the video about this lesson I also mention the differences between the two.

The Games

In order to play the two games in this course, you need two dice. You can print the dice in this workbook or use regular dice. I use an hourglass for the time, you can also use a stopwatch or your cell phone timer.

You can choose the six different materials that you use for the materials game. I use pastels, gouache, copic markers, Karisma crayons, charcoal and acrylic paint.

I have chosen to work on various types of paper, such as kraft paper, thick green paper, mixed media paper, sketch paper and sheet music from an old music book. The choice of paper depends on what material you are working with. So make sure you have everything ready before you start the game so you can stay in the flow! For the flower game you could simply use a pencil, graphite pencil or charcoal.

Adding the Flowers

To stick the patterns on I use gel medium from Talens Amsterdam, matt. To paint the flower I use the materials that I liked in the game. I use Rafael fine brushes.

Don't Forget...

If you work with gel medium, you might need something to protect your table and and your clothes.

Testimonials

“The online class ‘Flowers & Patterns’ is my first experience with taking online painting lessons. I initially thought this wasn’t for me, but I wanted to try it anyway. And I liked it so much!

I found the structure of the lessons very clear, Luz explains all the steps very well and demonstrates everything perfectly clear in the videos. This makes it possible to paint / draw a beautiful flower and patterns for yourself and to combine them into an integrated art piece. I think the new online classroom is a great platform to share feedback, questions, tips and progress with each other. This is my result and I’m very happy with it!”

Student 'Flowers & Patterns'

“In this online class, Luz shows you – step by step- how to build a beautiful composition. I learned how to beautifully combine a fantasy background with a realistic flower. Luz encourages you to paint your most favorite flower, this appeals to your inner self and you get a lot of enthusiasm and joy in your work.
Luz clearly explains how to create the background, which materials are most suitable (but all materials are okay) and how to put everything together into one whole.

In my opinion, the class is suitable for both beginners and advanced because you get a lot of insights into how to best structure your work.

The great thing about this class is that you can do it whenever it suits you. You can prepare all materials in advance, so that you can get into your flow. And you can play the videos all over again if you don’t quite understand something or if you want to refresh your memory over time. In addition, there is the possibility to print out the workbook, as a paper guide.”
