Abstract Painting Course
Beyond Colour Fields
When you already followed my course ‘Pattern Playing’, this probably feels a bit like a continuation to that class. Because it is an abstract course. Because we work with more advanced, patchwork-like compositions. Because colour will be our guideline. Above all, because patterns are a big part of it again. This time we create patterns with various printing techniques. The prints will work as patterns as well as an enrichment for texture.
The Secrets of Creating an Abstract Painting
In this class I invite you to play around and take your time to prepare yourself and find out what you love, before you start with your canvas. For me, this is the ultimate way to get into the painting process! I invite you to discover new printing techniques with things you find in and around your home.
Once you have an idea about your composition, your colours and you know your favourite printing items, you start with your project. We work with acrylic paint and decorate our art pieces with stamps, carving and stencilling.
Duration: ± 3 hrs and 55 min.
Suitable for all levels of experience.
Price: USD 79
Instant Access Class – Self-Paced – Lifetime Access
Have you ever printed with a placemat? Sounds crazy, but you could use almost everything. Think of candle holders, plates, packages, etc. Warning for your housemates: Acrylic paint all over the place!

Your art teacher: Luz
Marloes Bloedjes alias Luz is an artist living in The Netherlands, creating colorful, abstract paintings and mixed media artworks. She enjoys long walks in nature. Back home she mixes her impressions with her rich inner world. When these two come together, magical creations are born. In addition to her work as an artist, she teaches adults and children in her studio since 2010.
Since 2018 Luz is developing online classes, together with her partner, photo/videographer Anthony Verolme.
“In my art I feel a deep connection with myself and my inner world. If there were no art, there were no me.”
List of Supplies
For the preparation stage of this class you will need a sketchbook or paper and charcoal to draw your composition. It’s good to have some artbooks and some printed images.
A substrate to work on, this could be a canvas, but you could also work on thicker paper (300 grams or more) or on plywood. I use a 40×40 size canvas and a smaller rectangular canvas.
In this class we work with acrylic paint. I use paint from the brand Winsor & Newton Galeria: MIxing White, Buff Titanium, Cadmium Yellow, Green Gold, Burnt Umber, Payne’s Grey and an undefined Red. From Royal Talens Amsterdam: Neutral Grey and Raw Sienna . Of course, use your own favourite colour palette!
To create a foundation or background, a brayer can give you a great start. At the moment, the Essdee brayer is my best friend. In this class I use the 4” soft brayer. You could also use a large flat brush (a spalter) to create your first foundation. I use brushes in various sizes and shapes. My favourite ones are from the Raphael series. You’ll need a (tear-off) palette and a water tin or jar and kitchen towels to clean your brushes.
I will encourage you to look for things in and around your home that provide texture. Of course, you are free to use premade stamps and stencils. But I am sure you could do it without those! A very handy item for stencilling though is the tampon brush.
At the end of the course you might need some mark making tools, such as markers, fineliners, pens or soft pastels.
Something to protect your table and an apron to protect your clothes.

“I enrolled in the Pattern Playing course at Luz.Artworks. I watched the full set of videos, then went to gather all my supplies and got to work. This course was so inspiring that I could not stop working at, or dreaming about, my art pieces for three days straight! Luz is an excellent teacher and I found her so aligned with my thinking – “it’s all about the process” and “know when to stop if it doesn’t add to the piece”! The course and workbook were so clear, of high quality, and so inspiring. Next time I will work with more muted colours and will work more on developing my patterns, although I was still very happy with my results. 😊 Thank you Luz.”
If anyone is thinking about taking a class from Luz, just give it a chance. Luz is a wonderful teacher with a relaxed but energetic style. I never felt pressured or stressed. She interacts with the participants all the way through and was very encouraging. I really learned so much. 5/5
